Dr. Alan Ross’s Dental Resources

Our media is continually full of promotions for toothpaste, mouth rinses, denture adhesives products and more. I think it’s great that we have a vast choice of products. Don’t be lead to believe that purchasing the right product(s) will solve or cure your situation or replace professional help. How should you choose what to use or how to use it?

There are significant differences in the mouth, teeth and gums of people. We are not all the same and a one size fits all solution will fail many individuals. There are some general guidelines, but the correct products designed around a customized home care routine is essential. After a thorough examination (including x-rays) an experienced professional may help. Unfortunately, many of my colleagues default to a cookie-cutter approach of advice because they are themselves ignorant or lack the available time to go into customized-individual detailed instructions.

First of all don’t buy anything made in China. These products have been caught with poisons such as gypsum in the toothpaste and Chinese toothbrush bristles have been seen with microscopically jagged edges that might abrade.

Then, take all advertising claims with a dose of skepticism.

Listerine was originally marketed to cure dandruff and cure the common cold. By itself, it will not cure gingivitis or gum disease. Some people will need to cut Listerine with water because it is too strong for their tissues. I have seen excellent results with the use of Listerine in the right dose post-extraction and as a part of a oral hygiene regime to reduce the bleeding of gums in gingivitis.

Crest White Strips are safe as long as you do not have any undiagnosed dental cavities or tooth fractures, gum recession or gum (periodontal) disease. They may not work on all teeth and will definitely not work on crowns, veneers and discolored fillings. Some users complain of increased thermal (especially cold) sensitivity with use. Many are disappointed that the brightening effects are subtle. They are much less expensive than any other whitening treatment and I often will recommend them as a first step in some patients.

Crest or Colgate = Ford or Chevy trucks. They both will work and get you there. While I have many friends who are partial to their Ford or Chevy, the differences in outcomes between Crest and Colgate are minimal.
